Griffith University's research in sustainable tourism is driven by the International Sustainable Tourism Research Initiative.
The Initiative combines the expertise of the International Centre for Ecotourism Research and the Centre for Tourism, Sport and Service Innovation.
Griffith University also hosts the headquarters of the 14-university Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism, operational since 1997.
ISTRI has three research programs:
- tourism and climate change, led by Professor David Weaver
- tourism and corporate responsibility, led by Professor Michael Davidson
- tourism and conservation, led by Professor Ralf Buckley.
ISTRI runs cooperative research projects with colleagues worldwide and operates an ongoing program to support international visitors.
It also offers competitive fee scholarships for international postgraduate students undertaking a PhD supervised by ISTRI faculty.

Sustainable tourism gets more complicated
Sustainability in tourism recently became much more complicated says Griffith University Climate Response Program Research Director and Ecotourism Foundation Chair Professor Ralf Buckley. Stories of impending doom and gloom for Australian tourism were partly offset today by the release of findings from a major Griffith University research study.
